Can You Paint Vinyl Siding? Yes, But Not Everyone Should

Technically, the answer to “can you paint vinyl siding?” is “yes.” But this answer comes with a lot of caveats. The wrong paint, wrong color, or wrong application technique could result in warped siding, peeling paint, and lots of frustration. Here are four things you should know if you’re considering painting your vinyl siding.

1. You Can Only Use Vinyl-Safe Colors

Vinyl siding requires very specific, vinyl-safe paint colors. This is because the typical paint pigments may absorb too much heat. Like other PVC-based materials, vinyl will expand and contract with heat. A 12-foot panel of siding may expand and contract up to 5/8 of an inch between summer and winter. A paint that isn’t vinyl-safe may warp or buckle your vinyl siding, which can expose your home to moisture, insects, and other damage if left unattended.

Even with vinyl-safe paint, we recommend avoiding drastic color changes. Painting a lighter-colored vinyl a dark color could also lead to warping since dark colors absorb more heat than light colors. Lighter paint colors reflect a higher percentage of light and also tend to wear better over time. 2. You Shouldn’t Paint Vinyl Siding If It’s Too Old

Painting your vinyl siding with the right vinyl-safe paint and proper application techniques will make your home look brand new again! In fact, many homeowners choose to paint their siding instead of replacing it because it’s usually a more cost-effective and eco-friendly option.

Most modern exterior paints are mold and mildew-resistant and will help extend the life of your existing siding. A high-quality exterior paint will last anywhere from 10 to 14 years.

Of course, there comes a time when it’s better to replace your vinyl. Warping or cracking could let moisture underneath the siding and make its way to the interior of your home. Simply painting over the damage might disguise the problem for a while, but eventually, the paint will crack or peel. Depending on how old your siding is and its condition, you may be able to repair the damage before painting it.

3. You Need The Right Tools and Expertise

Like any home improvement project, you’ll get better results if you use the right tools and have the right expertise. You will get the best finish on vinyl siding if you apply paint with a sprayer. Vinyl does not absorb paint like wood does, so a brush or roller could result in uneven application or streaks.
